Conceptual Methaphor of Love on Twitter #cintaadalah

Conceptual Metaphor is one of many interesting subjects in Psycholinguistics. It explores connection between what is in human mind and how human utters it through words. The choices of words can be the path to penetrate the meaning beyond the words. This research aims to discuss and find what human thinks of love. Through a limited space provided by Twitter, which contains only 140 characters, humans tend to make their utterance as simple as possible but meaningful, expressing their thought of love. #Cintaadalah is one of many paths humans can share their ideas. After getting data, this research conveys some meaningful results, namely LOVE IS MYSTERY, LOVE IS ANSWER, LOVE IS WORSHIP, LOVE IS ART WORK, LOVE IS WEALTH, LOVE IS FAMILY, and LOVE IS HOUSE.

MBOK: ITS DISTRIBUTION, MEANING, AND FUNCTION

Mbok, in Javanese language, has not only a ’mother’ in meaning. As a lexicon in the language, mbok in one side truly means a ‘mother’ and still has the same meaning although it experiences the morphological process to be, at least, embok, simbok, or mboke. The variations exist and are spoken by Javanese native speakers throughout the Javanese dialects such as Suroboyoan, Solo, Yogyakarta, Bagelen, and Banyumasan dialects spread from the East Java, Yogyakarta, and Central Java. However, mbok, as a particle has different meaning, even different various meanings relying on its distribution in a sentence. Then the meanings bear its different various functions as well in the sentence based on the context of the sentence (grammatical-semantics meaning). Through Teknik Balik (Converse Technique) the data gained was analyzed to distinguish the position of the particle in the sentence in order to reach its significant different meanings and functions. At least, from the analysis, we have three positions of mbok in the sentences, that are in the initial, middle, and the end of the sentences. These positions affect the meanings and functions that can be seen as follows; ‘, is not it?’ (Tag Question) and ‘is/are” (Verbal Question) for emphasizing, ‘please’ for requesting a help, ‘may be’ and ‘in case’ for expressing possibility, and ‘causing’ for expressing cause-effect.

A Unique Christmas Celebration in Australia

Christmas Day falls on December 25 and is an occasion for Christians to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Many Australians give each other gifts, prepare special meals and decorate their homes at this time of year. Many aspects of the Christmas celebrations are originated from winter celebrations in Europe. However Christmas celebration in Australia is increasingly influenced by the Australian climate and wildlife.
A day before Christmas Day usually is called as Christmas Eve. It is a busy time of the year for many people who celebrate the Christmas season, as many spend Christmas Eve preparing for Christmas Day. Many offices have pre-Christmas lunches or parties on Christmas Eve. Some workers may have a half or full day off. Those who have time off may take part in summer (southern hemisphere) activities or sports such as swimming, surfing, tennis, windsurfing, football, cricket, barbecues and beach volleyball. For some, it is a time to travel to the northern hemisphere to experience a Christmas with snow. Why? It is since the weather is hot in outback Australia and other regions during this time of the year. Christmas in Australia occurs at the height of summer where the temperature can reach a sweltering 30°C whilst here in the UK, us Brits are wrapping up warm to beat off an average temperature of just 1°C with only 1 to 2 hours of sunshine, whilst down in Oz the sun shines all day long. Therefore, Australians celebrate their Christmas without all traditions of Europeans have such as ‘Santa Claus’ with his smart deer, snow, Christmas Tree, praying socks, candies, and other stuffs that we usually recognize in common.

Flying Without Wings

by Arini Sabrina

Some years ago, there was such an amazing part of my life story because I could fly with my own struggle. To be honest, I had never taken a trip using an airplane. So, when I entered university for the first time in Yogyakarta, I attached that dream into my heart and my prayers, hoping that flying would come into reality soon. Instead of daydreaming every day, I passed the days by trying to get much knowledge from the lectures and joining university choir, since I love singing very much. From the choir, I got good news that there was a national university student festival which is conducted every two years, and one of the contests was pop singing. The point that made me enthusiastic was the festival would be in Pontianak next two years. I thought to myself that the festival might be the door to fly. I was really interested and after that I prepared myself to welcome the moment.

As time went by, I finally knew that there was an audition for the festival in my university. Therefore, I immediately joined the activity. I sang with my own style, trying to sing from heart, since I knew that singing is an activity of sending messages from the heart, not from the mind. Although I was not confident, really not confident, but I tried my best, as far as I could. At the end of the audition, the first miracle came. The judges announced that I was the winner and had a right to join the contest on the province level. Alhamdulillah, my dream was closer. But, again, I had to prepare for the most deciding moment to get the golden ticket to Pontianak. To get ready, I had many exercises with a lecturer from the musical art department.

My struggle was not dissatisfying. In the end, I could win the singing contest, representing Yogyakarta province and getting the free flight ticket! Those were the next miracles from God. I thanked Allah, I also thanked many people who helped me much, so that I could see my dream come true.

That was my own precious little dream story. Perhaps, even though my dream is not so interesting for some people, but I believe that a little dream which comes into reality with struggle will take me to other bigger dreams.
